About the museum

The museum is dedicated to Olimpio Cammelli, a volunteer and for a time the leader of the group that from 1983 restored the Chiesa Vecchia of Gorfigliano and the Colle di Casa, where the castle and the old village once stood. Over time Cammelli had gathered a large collection of tools and machinery from the Garfagnana. After his death his wife Emma Orsi donated it to the Associazione Culturale Paese Vecchio di Gorfigliano, which still runs it today.

The museum opened on 16 May 2009, with the support of the Municipality of Minucciano and the parish, in premises built by volunteers beside the Chiesa Vecchia, and is part of the Ecomuseo dell'Alta Garfagnana. The hill offers a fine view over Lake Gramolazzo and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.

The route presents objects and machinery of domestic, peasant and craft life, mostly from the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century: tools of the marble quarrymen, agricultural implements, reconstructed workshops of ancient trades such as the blacksmith, the knife-grinder and the cobbler, spinning and winemaking. On the upper floor are the “Mondo del Falegname” (World of the Carpenter), a library and photographs of the restoration work on the church. The museum now displays more than 3,000 objects.
