About the museum
The collection is housed in the main tower of the Rocca di Camporgiano, a medieval fortress that passed from the Malaspina to the Este family in 1446; it was the Estensi who gave it its present appearance. The museum spans two floors and was reopened with a new display in 1999.
Most of the ceramics come from the waste pits found in the space between the 14th-century curtain wall and the Este defensive walls, which were emptied during the restorations of the 1970s; a smaller group was recovered at Nicciano, in the municipality of Piazza al Serchio. The collection includes archaic graffito ware, Faenza maiolica and pieces made in Tuscany, bearing witness to Este rule in the Garfagnana.
The holdings cover a span of around three centuries: jugs, bowls and basins with graffito decoration illustrate everyday and display ceramics from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period.
