About the museum
The museum is located in the visitor centre of the Orecchiella reserve, in San Romano in Garfagnana, within the Parco nazionale dell’Appennino tosco-emiliano (Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park). The three-storey building houses, alongside the natural history museum, a technical office, a library, a research centre and a meeting room, and serves as the reception point for schools and visitors to the reserve.
The exhibition is interactive and presents the natural environment of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines through reconstructions of habitats such as beech woods, high-altitude grasslands, rock faces and pastures, complemented by dioramas of fauna and flora. One section is devoted to birds of prey.
The reserve has wildlife enclosures with mouflon, bears and roe deer, and a garden of mountain flowers. The museum offers educational activities for school groups and adults.
