About the museum

The Museo del Territorio dell’Alta Valle dell’Aulella was founded in 1981 in Casola in Lunigiana and is housed in the former municipal palace in the historic centre of the town. The museum is dedicated to the cultural identity of the valley and offers a thematic and chronological route through archaeology, ethnography and art.

The prehistoric section documents the settlement of Lunigiana with finds from the Middle Palaeolithic and the Metal Age from sites such as the Tecchia di Equi, the Tana della Volpe and the Grotta delle Felci. There follow copies of statue-stelae, material linked to the castellari (fortified hilltop settlements), Roman-period evidence, and medieval capitals and baptismal fonts from the pievi (rural parish churches) of the area.

Part of the collection concerns sacred art, with chalices, monstrances and vestments, and works produced locally by confraternities, as well as lanterns and roadside shrines (maestà). The museum also provides information on educational routes to nearby places, such as the Tecchia di Equi, the village of Gragnola, Codiponte, Monte dei Bianchi and the pievi of Offiano and San Lorenzo di Minucciano.
