About the museum
The museum is run by the Arnasco Olive Growers’ Cooperative, which set it up in the building that houses its own headquarters and the olive mill, to showcase traditional crafts. The idea of a permanent exhibition on the history and origins of this small olive-growing community grew out of collaboration between the cooperative and the municipal administration, which bought an old, disused building and renovated it with original materials. The most demanding part of the work was finding the ancient slate slabs (ciappe) for the new roof, which was made possible partly thanks to a regional grant.
More than five hundred objects reconstruct local life over past centuries: rooms, tools, papier-mâché figures, everyday implements, and the crafts and work in the fields and among the olive trees. An olive mill from 1796 shows how oil was produced, a source of pride for the community, which can now count on recognition of the local olive variety, the arnasca. The museum is part of the educational tourism circuit and hosts many school groups every year.
