About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the tree cults of the Lucanian territory, rites of peasant tradition linked to marriage and fertility, of which few traces remain. It is considered an ethnoanthropological museum that is almost unique in Europe, and it reconstructs the history and types of these rituals, typical of very few places in the Mediterranean, including the Maggio festival of Accettura.
The building, conceived some years earlier, was opened in 2005 and takes over the legacy of the studies of Professor Giovanni Battista Bronzini and the anthropologist Ferdinando Mirizzi. It is located in the Gallipoli Cognato – Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park and also serves as a visitor centre.
The museum also has a library with texts on tree cults in Italy and Europe and a video library with films about the Maggio festivals.
