About the museum
The museum is on the first floor of the former convent of the Oratorian Fathers (Padri Oratoriani), in the historic centre of Sant’Elpidio a Mare, a town long linked to shoe production in the Marche. It holds thousands of shoes, lasts and tools, arranged in three sections.
The first, devoted to footwear of every time and place, presents examples from different eras and countries, from reproductions of Roman calcei (ancient Roman footwear) to pieces from the 20th century. The second collects shoes that belonged to famous people, including popes, sports champions, Nobel laureates and figures from politics and entertainment, such as the tenor Beniamino Gigli. The third is devoted to the shoe industry of the Marche, with the current production of local companies.
The visit ends with a reconstruction of a cobbler’s workshop, with the old tools for handmade work.
