About the museum
The scientific museums of Fermo were first established as civic collections housed in Villa Vitali, a 19th-century noble residence built in 1827 on Corso Cavour and later bought by the Comune. Over time the villa housed the ethnographic polar museum dedicated to Silvio Zavatti, the ornithological museum named after Tommaso Salvadori, the meteorite that fell at Fermo in 1996 and other collections, including a collection of cameras.
Since 2018 the collections have been moved to the nearby Palazzo Paccaroni, an ancient residence on Corso Cavour, in the San Bartolomeo district, with richly frescoed ceilings. Here the route has been re-arranged with educational panels in Italian and English and multimedia content viewable on tablets.
The Museo Polare is presented as the only Italian museum devoted to the environments, peoples and explorations of the Arctic; among the most significant objects are a traditional costume of the Nenets and a dance mask from Greenland. The Museo di Scienze Naturali, meanwhile, holds the ornithological collection of Tommaso Salvadori, one of the leading Italian ornithologists, formed partly from hunting trips carried out in the Marche.
