About the museum
The Pinacoteca civica «Vittore Crivelli» of Sant'Elpidio a Mare is located inside the former convent of the Padri Filippini (Oratorians). Its most important piece is the 15th-century polyptych of the Coronation of the Virgin, a tempera on panel made up of eighteen panels by Vittore Crivelli: in the centre the Coronation between Saint Bonaventure, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Francis and Saint Louis of Toulouse; above, other saints and the Madonna; below, six small panels with episodes from the life of Saint John the Baptist.
The gallery also holds two other works by the Venetian painter: the triptych of the Visitation of the Virgin to Saint Elizabeth, consisting of four panels and a crowning panel (cimasa), and a painting of a Franciscan friar at prayer. The polyptych and the triptych were commissioned by the friars to furnish the church of the Observant Friars Minor.
The museum also houses a detached fresco, somewhat damaged, showing Saint Gabriel the Archangel. Visits to the town's museums, the gallery and the Museo della Calzatura (footwear museum), start from the Tourist Office and take place in small groups by booking.
