About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Ariano Irpino is a state museum that collects material from the Irpinia area. Since December 2014 it has been managed by the Ministry of Culture through the Polo museale della Campania, which in December 2019 became the Direzione regionale Musei Campania.
The route opens with the prehistoric remains of the Starza village, documenting the Neolithic and the Bronze Age: pottery, furnaces for bronze working and flint tools; the material from the Final Bronze Age dates to the 13th–10th century BC.
The pre-Roman section follows, with an Italic temple of the 3rd century BC, the Samnite necropolis of Casalbore and the Samnite sanctuary of Greci, Samnite-Irpinian pottery, bronzes, silver fibulae and bucchero. The Roman section displays coins, bronze tools, glass and pottery from the vicus of Aequum Tuticum, and two milestones: one bearing the name of the consul Marco Emilio Lepido and one on the Via Herculia with distances in Roman miles.
