About the museum

The museum, opened in 2010 on the initiative of the surgeon's family and the municipal administration of the time, commemorates Pasquale Castiglione Morelli and the difficult conditions of healthcare in southern Italy in the twentieth century, when surgical clinics were rare and hospitals and doctors were hard to reach, especially for the less well off.

The first room partly reconstructs an emergency ward, with three original beds, iron bedside tables, an infusion pump, a table with surgical instruments and a display case of medicines and period glass syringes. The second room houses large equipment, including two machines probably used to sterilise surgical instruments, and an original wooden cabinet with older instruments.

The last room recreates an operating theatre, with the operating table, the straps used to restrain patients in the absence of painkillers, and a shelf with tools, gloves and fabrics used as gauze. A display case shows around forty finds, including plaster casts of foot and facial deformities.
