About the museum
The Museo della Civiltà del Vino Primitivo is located within the Cantina Produttori di Manduria and was born out of the wish not to lose traces of a cultural world undergoing rapid transformation and at risk of being forgotten. The collection of objects and testimonies is not nostalgic in intent: it aims to recognise the cultural and heritage value of the peasant world and of the practices and crafts that still survive in different forms.
The objects are presented on an underground route set in the cellar's ancient 19th-century wine cisterns, which have been transformed into themed settings. Walking through them, visitors encounter work in the fields, the kitchen and wine, music, techniques, festive and everyday clothing, ploughs and historic carts, and objects and images of the people who made and used them.
The museum aims to be a bridge between the past and present of agriculture and winemaking. The visit can be completed with tastings of wine and of dishes from the local gastronomic tradition, in which wine and food are presented as part of the area's history.
