About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Oria is housed in the Palazzo Vescovile (16th century) and was inaugurated on 29 December 2000 at the wish of Bishop Marcello Semeraro, in order to preserve and make known the historic, artistic and archaeological heritage from the Cattedrale di Maria Santissima Assunta in Cielo and from the diocese.
The route presents archaeological finds, works and liturgical objects from the prehistoric age to the 19th century. The visit is completed by the archaeological collection of Bishop Alessandro Maria Kalefati (1781–1794), made up of finds discovered in the diocesan territory and dating from the Palaeolithic to the Iron Age. Inside, frescoed ceilings attributed to Pellegrino Ribaldi, of the school of Raphael, can also be admired.
