About the museum
The museum holds the historical memory of the Contrada del Bruco and gathers objects dating back to the 17th century: sacred furnishings, flags, costumes, the banners of the Palii won, archive materials and testimonies of life in the contrada. It stands next to the oratory of the Santissimo Nome di Gesù, which the residents of the district built at their own expense in 1670 in the middle of via del Comune.
The first nucleus of the premises came into being after 1887, when the Contrada bought the building adjoining the church, formerly owned by the sculptor Giovanni Duprè. After various projects that remained on paper, the Sala delle Vittorie (hall of victories) was built with the voluntary work of members of the contrada and opened on 5 August 1967.
A major extension, designed at the end of the nineties, involved the Sala delle Vittorie, two flats above it and the undercroft beneath the church; the new museum was opened on 1 June 2006. The museum is laid out on three levels: on the ground floor the Sala delle Vittorie with the Palii, on the middle level art and sacred furnishings, and on the upper level the current costumes of the historical procession and memorabilia of contrada life.
