About the museum

Dongo is the village on the upper Lario (Lake Como) where, in April 1945, Benito Mussolini and several leading figures of the Italian Social Republic were stopped and taken to the town hall, Palazzo Manzi, for the formalities of their arrest. A few days earlier the Sala d’Oro, the palace’s main hall, had served as a funeral chamber for local partisans who had fallen, and the building thus became the scene of events that remain in the national memory.

The museum, formerly known as the Museo della Resistenza Comasca, occupies the rooms of Palazzo Manzi itself and recounts its history with a modern display. The route uses artefacts, documents, testimonies, unseen footage and multimedia reconstructions, and invites visitors to follow the events in person: from the Resistance fighting on Lake Como to the capture and execution of the senior officials, the epilogue of the Fascist ventennio.

The visit is designed as an interactive story, in which digital technologies accompany the original objects and allow visitors to approach a controversial and painful page of Italian history.
