About the museum
The Museo della galassia grew out of the vision of Umberto “Renato” Bonini, who had it in the 1960s after a serious crisis and a period in hospital. Having moved to a hill in the inland area of the La Spezia province, he built his own universe here from the 1970s until his death, a creative environment developed entirely independently.
The site extends along the main road of the hamlet of Valdonica, in the municipality of Calice al Cornoviglio. It comprises a large circular castle with staircases, towers and paths, walls with faces carved in stone, fountains and sculptures, a botanical garden and an enclosure of decorative panels made of iron rod. At the centre is the “galaxy”, made up of coloured globes joined by spirals and several metres high.
The complex is regarded as an example of Art Brut, with elements of naïve art. It belongs to the Bonini family and can be visited by appointment.
