About the museum
The castle of Calice al Cornoviglio stands in the middle and lower Val di Vara. An early fortification or residence from around the year 1000, perhaps of the Obertenghi, is documented from 1077. From the 13th century it belonged to the Malaspina family, then passed to the Fieschi and, after the failure of the conspiracy against Andrea Doria, to the Doria. In 1772 it was ceded to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo, and used for administrative purposes. Until 1993 it was the seat of the town hall.
Today the castle houses municipal and tourist offices, the environmental education centre of the Parco regionale di Montemarcello-Magra-Vara and various civic and private collections. On the noble floor are the Museo della Brigata “Val di Vara” and the Museo delle Risorse Faunistiche (MURF). On the lower floors are the Pinacoteca “David Beghè”, dedicated to the fresco painter born in Calice in 1854, the small Museo “Pietro Rosa”, and collections on peasant tradition, the statue-stele and beekeeping.
The collections are currently being reorganised.
