About the museum

The museum was opened on 29 June 2007 in the small village of San Pancrazio, a hamlet of the municipality of Bucine, to gather and preserve the documentation on the massacre of June 1944. At that time the men of the village were gathered in the cellar of the Fattoria Pierangeli and killed by soldiers of the Hermann Göring Armoured Division; the building was then set on fire.

The property stood abandoned for a long time. Bought by the Comune di Bucine in the seventies, it was restored and turned into the Centro interculturale “Don Giuseppe Torelli”, named after the village priest, who was also a victim of the massacre. The museum occupies the cellars of the building, on the very spot where the massacre took place.

The route presents documents on the massacre, unpublished historical mapping of the massacres carried out in the area between the Valdichiana and the Valdambra, and photographs from the Canadian military archive, which help reconstruct the days after the massacre. Next to the museum are an ossuary (sacrario) with plaques bearing the names of all the victims and a rose garden with a plaque for each plant.
