About the museum
The Sala della Memoria opened in 2004, on the 60th anniversary of the Nazi-Fascist massacre at Civitella in Val di Chiana on 29 June 1944, when 244 people were killed. It was set up by the Committee of the victims’ families and is run by the Associazione Civitella Ricorda.
The exhibition brings together items found on the victims, numerous photographs of the village before and after its destruction, archive documents, historical research, testimonies, records of the judicial investigations, books, video cassettes recorded over the years and various remnants of war. The aim is to remember the horrors and mistakes of war and to pass this memory on to future generations.
The building that houses the room stands on the site of the old palazzo della comunità, the Civitella chancery, once the seat of the town’s civil administration. A stone slab bearing the inscription Sala della Memoria is placed along the loggia. Among the distinguished visitors recorded are the Presidents of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and Sergio Mattarella.
