About the museum

The Pinacoteca d’arte contemporanea is located on Via Martiri di Civitella, in the building that stands where the community palace (or chancery) of Civitella once stood, formerly the seat of the town’s civil administration. Historical sources describe the ground floor as the chancellor’s audience hall and the community archive, the lower floors as a stable and cellar, and the first floor as the apartment of the gonfaloniere (civic standard-bearer).

After the Second World War the building was entirely restructured and used as a public school. Today it houses the municipal picture gallery, the biennial painting prize “Città di Civitella”, the “Stanza della memoria”, run by the committee of relatives of the victims of the massacre, and a post office.

The gallery holds works of contemporary painting and sculpture. The oldest piece is an impromptu black-and-white painting from 1971 by the American artist Ellisse Pogafsky Hakrs; to this are added sculptures donated by contemporary artists, including works by Luca Nistri.
