About the museum
The museum was inaugurated in May 2005 and is named after the painter, illustrator and caricaturist Lorenzo Contratti, born in Colmurano, who signed his works with the pseudonym Renzo Ventura, inspired by his mother’s surname. It is housed in the former church of Santi Pietro e Paolo and is owned by the municipality.
After moving first to Bologna and then to Milan as a young man, Contratti established himself as an illustrator of covers and magazines, including the magazine of the Touring Club Italiano. His style, midway between Secession and Art Deco, is characterised by an elegant and delicate line. Marked by a serious mental illness, he spent his last years in hospitals and asylums, and died in 1940. His true identity was rediscovered only in the 1990s, thanks to the research of Paola Pallottino and Michele Rossi, who also identified his place of birth.
The museum holds the artist’s works. After restoration following earthquake damage, it is open to visitors again.
