About the museum
The museum is located in the locality of Il Semaforo on Ventotene, in a building erected during the Second World War and recently restored. It is an ecomuseum, visitor centre and observatory devoted to bird migration. For birds crossing between Africa and Europe over the Mediterranean, the island is a stopover.
The exhibition presents the results of about twenty years of research on the island carried out by the Istituto Nazionale per la Fauna Selvatica, now part of ISPRA, with the help of many volunteer bird ringers. These data helped make Ventotene and Santo Stefano European Union Special Protection Areas.
The route illustrates, with models, reconstructions and films, the reasons for migration, the mechanisms of orientation and the routes. From the terrace above the sea visitors can watch birds in flight and, at the end of the visit, sometimes see a bird-ringing session.
