About the museum
The museum occupies the first three floors of the Palazzo De Vio, once the residence of Cardinal Tommaso De Vio. The building was altered over the centuries and given a new façade in the mid-19th century; for more than a century, until the late 1960s, it housed the diocesan seminary.
Many paintings arrived in Gaeta in the mid-19th century, in the Bourbon period, when King Ferdinand II regarded the city as a second capital of the Kingdom. Today the picture gallery holds panels and canvases, mainly religious, dating from the 12th to the 18th century, with works attributed to or linked with artists such as Giovanni da Gaeta, Quentin Metsys, Luis de Morales, Scipione Pulzone, Luca Giordano and Francesco Solimena.
The goldsmiths’ and silversmiths’ section covers the period from the 11th to the 19th century and includes a Byzantine cross donated by Cardinal De Vio to the cathedral of Gaeta. Among the best-known pieces are the Banner of the Battle of Lepanto (1571), which flew on the papal flagship, and three precious rolls of the Exultet.
