About the museum
The Museo Storico Archeologico di Ventotene is located in Piazza Castello, with its entrance from the moat of the Forte Torre. It originated as the permanent display of an exhibition created in 1983 by the Istituto di Storia e di Arte del Lazio Meridionale on the Pontine archipelago, and has retained a mainly educational character. It is a municipal cultural service, and the visit is run by the cooperative Terra Maris.
The route follows the historical development of the island and begins with the underwater and maritime theme, with material recovered from the seabed that documents the occasional passage of ships and the commercial routes of the imperial age. A model shows Ventotene in Roman times, with the imperial villa of Punta Eolo, the harbour, the fish pond and the aqueduct with its six cisterns for collecting rainwater.
In the following rooms are displayed painted plasterwork, polychrome stucco and marbles from the villa of Punta Eolo, a cast of the herm of Jupiter Ammon (the original, found in 1771, is in the Museo Nazionale di Napoli), the portrait head of the young Tiberius, Campana-type terracotta plaques, models of the cisterns and baths, the Bourbon coat of arms of the church and an “alla cappuccina” tomb (covered with tiles) of the 2nd century AD. The last room is listed in the museum’s information material as part of the display.
