About the museum
The naturalistic exhibition “Preone – 200 milioni di anni” is housed in Palazzo Lupieri, a 17th–18th-century building in the centre of the village of Preone, in Carnia. It is part of the CarniaMusei network and is linked to the Geoparco delle Alpi Carniche.
The display is built around the palaeontological richness of the Rio Seazza valley, where remains of Upper Triassic reptiles have been found, including the pterosaur Preondactylus buffarinii and the small tree-dwelling reptile Megalancosaurus preonensis.
The route unfolds in two rooms. The first reconstructs the natural environments of the area with display cases and dioramas, and the most representative animal species, from mammals to birds and insects. The second illustrates the landscape of Preone in the Triassic and displays local fossils, including the footprint of a pterosaur with a wingspan of about 50 cm and fossil crustaceans of an extinct species.
The visit can be completed with the nature trail “Stavolo Lunas”, which starts a short distance from the building and presents, on information panels, the geology, palaeontology, fauna and vegetation of the area.
