About the museum
The Museo Archivio della Memoria, known as MAM, grew out of research started in 2004 in Bagnone, in the Lunigiana, when the municipality took part in the regional project “La Toscana e le Americhe”. The project, carried out with the University of Florence under the scientific direction of Adriana Dadà, was devoted to the memory of emigration.
The museum is housed in the Palazzo della Cultura, in Piazza Marconi, along the Via Francigena. It holds the municipal historical archive, family archives, photographs and video interviews collected during the research, mainly documenting the 20th century. The website presents a memory library, a periodicals archive, a photo archive, multimedia material and a plaster cast gallery.
Over the years the MAM has developed projects on social themes of the area, including “Donne di Lunigiana”, “La memoria ritrovata” on the period of the war and the Resistance, “Migranti ieri e oggi” and “Le barsane”, and it offers educational workshops for schools, such as the theatre project “Valigie di cartone”.
