About the museum
The archaeological museum, opened in 1992, is housed in the canonical building next to the Pieve di San Giorgio di Valpolicella, an ancient Romanesque church with Lombard origins and three apses. An ethnographic section with testimonies of local traditions, set up in the 1970s, completes the museum complex.
The collections document a long history of occupation in the area: flint tools and arrowheads from the Neolithic, an axe from the late Bronze Age, Iron Age ornaments and tools for spinning and weaving, as well as Roman-period pottery, oil lamps and votive statuettes linked to the territory of the Arusnati, the population of the local pagus. There are also Jurassic ammonites, ten inscribed Roman stelae, including the oldest known Roman inscription of Valpolicella (1st century BC), and fossils and fossil fish from Monte Pastello.
Outside the church, an archaeological park shows the remains of a protohistoric village of the 5th–4th centuries BC, excavated east of the apses, with a house-workshop for working horn and spindle whorls.
