About the museum

The museum occupies some rooms on the lower mezzanine of Palazzo Spinola, a 17th-century building in Rocchetta Ligure that also houses the town hall. In the past those rooms served a defensive purpose and as servants' quarters. The palazzo is part of the Castelli Aperti circuit.

The first collection, the “Museo della Vallata e dei Partigiani”, was opened in 1990 on the initiative of the former partisan Giambattista Lazagna from Genoa, a commander known by the nom de guerre “Carlo” and deputy commander of the Pinan-Cichero division, who fought in the Val Borbera. Since 2003 the museum has been named after Lazagna. The current display was created at the wish of the municipal administration, with the support of the Regione Piemonte, the Province of Alessandria, historical institutes and ANPI Val Borbera.

The rooms hold weapons, ammunition, mortars, field radios, water bottles, bags and rucksacks of the partisans who fought in the valley, as well as pictures showing the badges and ranks of the partisan commands. The museum also tells the social life of the valley. A Documentation Centre, an offshoot of the museum, collects printed and manuscript material on the history of the places and their inhabitants, a small specialised library on the Resistance, and a collection of first-hand testimony (audio and video interviews, photographs, documents) relating to the Borbera and Curone valleys.
