About the museum
The Rocca di Monfalcone is a medieval fortification that overlooks the town from the hill behind it. It was restored between 1950 and 1955 and from 1968 entrusted to the Gruppo Speleologico Monfalconese “Amici del Fante”, founded in 1948.
The museum opened there in 1970. It began as a palaeontological collection, which was later moved to the town and replaced by the current permanent speleological exhibition. The museum documents the geological history of the area back 500 million years and aims to introduce visitors to karst phenomena in a region with more than 7,000 caves.
The group also runs outreach activities, with lectures and guided visits in schools. The museum's management and workshops are located in the town.
