About the museum

The Sacrario militare di Redipuglia, on the slope of a Karst hill, was designed by a working group led by the sculptor Giannino Castiglioni and the architect Giovanni Greppi, and inaugurated on 18 September 1938. It is Italy's largest military shrine: a flight of 22 steps of white Karst stone, each bearing the word “Presente”, holds the remains of tens of thousands of soldiers who fell in the First World War, among them the commander of the Third Army, Duke Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy-Aosta.

The museum, linked to the shrine and run by the Commissariato generale per le onoranze ai caduti, collects war materials, memorabilia and photographic, film and paper documentation on the Great War, and in particular on the Italian front. The route also includes reconstructions of military positions.

A visit to the shrine and the museum offers a chance to get to know the Karst landscape of the Isonzo, the scene of the Isonzo battles, and to reflect on the memory of the fallen. In the votive chapel and the adjoining rooms, personal objects belonging to Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers are also preserved.
