About the museum
The MuCa is the shipbuilding museum of Monfalcone, opened in 2017 in the former Albergo Operai (workers’ hostel) of the village of Panzano. It presents itself as the only Italian museum dedicated to shipbuilding, and it tells the story of more than a century of the shipyard and of the workers’ district that grew up around the factory. Panzano was the first Italian example of a company town and a significant model of a planned district from the period of the second industrialisation.
The exhibition covers the company town, corporate welfare and the wars, the shipyard and its entrepreneurs, construction techniques from ships to related products, and the design of ship interiors. An important part is devoted to 20th-century art, with works by Zoran Mušič, Marcello Mascherini and Timmel. Multimedia stations, augmented reality and 3D reconstructions make the visit immersive, with a sensory tunnel and a crane simulator.
The museum is conceived as a dispersed museum. Besides its fifteen rooms, it involves the workers’ village of Panzano with walking routes and an app that tells the stories of places and people, and it offers guided tours that include the Fincantieri shipbuilding plant. A second route leads to the building itself and its original function as a hostel for workers.
