About the museum
The archaeological area is in San Giovanni al Timavo, in the municipality of Duino Aurisina, near the springs of the Timavo, inside the “G. Randaccio” aqueduct park in San Giovanni di Duino. The site is run by the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle arti e Paesaggio del Friuli Venezia Giulia.
It is a large Roman-period seaside villa, built along a karst slope: its rooms are arranged on three levels that descend towards the coast. Excavations carried out between 1988 and 1991 uncovered about 1,300 square metres and some forty rooms, partly used as residential spaces by the owner's family and partly intended for productive activities.
