About the museum
The Museo della Transumanza is housed in the “Baraccone”, an old sheepfold belonging to the municipality of Villetta Barrea, in the heart of the Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise. It was founded in 1997 within a European transnational cooperation programme (Leader II) with the aim of preserving the tools, traditions and memories of an area tied to shepherding since ancient times.
The premises were renovated in 2007 thanks to a Leader Plus project of the association Villetta Barrea, a “borgo fattoria didattica” (educational farm village). Since 2011 management has been entrusted to the Associazione Borgo Fattoria Didattica, which has organised the spaces into educational workshops, a room for meetings and celebrations, a museum with a bookshop, a permanent exhibition on the landscape and a tasting area for local products.
Outside there is an equipped area for picnics and games, for watching deer and for transhumance festivals. The museum is also the starting point for routes along the regio tratturo (royal drove road) and for guided visits to the pastoral sites of the park.
