About the museum
The museum is located in Sacco, a hamlet of Cosio Valtellino, in an old notaries’ house. The main hall was used as a hayloft until the late 19th century, but this did not damage the painted plaster.
The camera picta (painted room) preserves a cycle of frescoes with stamped floral decorations and scrolls bearing prayers and proverbs. The scenes include a hunter, a Pietà with Saint Bernard, the kneeling donor, the Trinity above the entrance and the Homo Salvadego, a hairy man armed with a club. The Pietà is dated 18 May 1464 and bears the inscription with the names of the painters Simon and Battestino, possibly linked to the Baschenis of Averara.
The wild man is a mythological figure found throughout the Alpine arc: he symbolises peasant culture, appears in the coat of arms of the Dieci Giurisdizioni (Ten Jurisdictions), one of the Tre Leghe Grigie (Three Leagues), and tradition remembers him as the master of herders and of dairy processing.
