About the museum
The Museo del Territorio of San Daniele del Friuli is housed in the former Sant'Antonio hospital, in the 17th-century cloister of what was once a Dominican convent. The building has a history of more than two hundred years, during which it was converted several times for different uses; its present layout dates from the 1990s and is the work of the architect Giovanni Avon. The museum belongs to the Municipality of San Daniele, which works with the association “Scriptorium Forumiuliense” to run it.
The archaeology section, recently renovated, displays finds dating from the 11th century BC to the early Middle Ages, including bronze earrings with glass-paste beads, a ring with two winged Victories from the Coseanetto necropolis and a wedding ring with portraits of a couple from Coseano. The Jewish section documents the long presence of a Jewish community in San Daniele, a rare case in Friuli and the Veneto. The sacred and medieval art sections, still being set up, highlight the period when the town tied its fortunes to the Patriarchal State; they include two wooden altarpieces, panel and canvas paintings and fragments of frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries.
The bequests section holds donations from the physician and collector Giuseppe Vidoni, the medallist Erasmo Contardo and the amateur painter Vincenzo Gattoli. The ethnographic collection documents farm life, ham production, silkworm breeding and the making of “scarpez”. Among the best-known pieces are a 15th-century polyptych from the Venetian circle and a detail of the face of the Madonna of 1488.
