About the museum
The museum presents the history of the Buja area through archaeological finds, historical objects and works of art. The archaeological section displays Roman-era material, ceramics, ornaments and clothing items from the early Middle Ages, and a large group of medieval coins, alongside votive medals of the 17th and 18th centuries that bear witness to the strong religiosity of Friulian society in the past.
The most distinctive core is the collection of art medals, created to honour the master engravers who brought prestige to Buja and Friuli around the world in the 20th century. Pietro Giampaoli and Guerrino Mattia Monassi, both born in Buja, directed the Zecca dello Stato (State Mint). Two thematic sections explore “I maestri incisori buiesi” and the 120 works by artists from Buja, Friuli and Italy dedicated to the 1976 earthquake; a teaching area illustrates one of the stages of medal production.
Over time the collection has been enriched with works by artists well known in Italy and abroad. The cast bronzes and coins recount events that marked the history of Friuli and of contemporary Italy. Among the objects on display are also the “mos”, decorated ceramic or glass tankards in the Bavarian style, linked to Friulian emigration.
