About the museum
The museum opened on 25 September 1999. It occupies several rooms in the former Niccolini cellars, a historic winery from which, at the beginning of the 20th century, wine was shipped to Switzerland, Germany and even overseas. It is owned by the Comune and run by the Pro Loco di Carmignano. The scientific project is by Paolo De Simonis. After the renovation of 2002 the first room can host tastings, lessons and screenings.
The route uses wine as a thread to tell the history and culture of the area, from the Etruscans and Romans to sharecropping and rural life. It recalls the edict of Grand Duke Cosimo III de’ Medici of 1716, which set production rules for Carmignano wine and anticipated protected designations of origin by more than a century. Panels, cabrei (illustrated estate surveys), farm tools and a 17th-century wine press accompany the story.
One room is dedicated to the photographs of the Swiss ethnologist Paul Scheuermeier, who documented Carmignano between 1919 and 1930, alongside images by Vittorio Cintolesi of the sharecropping world. The bottles of the Melis collection, more than eight hundred examples from around the world, and multimedia stations complete the visit. In the evenings the museum hosts courses and tasting events.
