About the museum
The museum occupies the cellars of the Villa di Poggio Reale in Rufina and tells the story of the vine and viticulture in the Val di Sieve. Wine consumption in this valley is documented from the Etruscan period onwards; in 1716 an edict of Cosimo III de’ Medici delimited and protected the vineyards of Rufina, and in the 19th century the village received awards at wine competitions.
The display presents tools for growing vines and for producing and preserving wine, in use between 1930 and 1960, together with a large collection of flasks, some of them in 18th-century blown glass, as well as photographs, videos and original documents. The museum has four rooms and houses a replica of the Carro Matto, a symbol of Rufina’s tradition, and a pyramid of about 1,500 flasks wrapped in straw.
In the same spaces, where traces of the past sit alongside current production, is the Enoteca di Villa Poggio Reale. The visit begins at the gate, along an avenue of cypress trees lined with vineyards.
