About the museum

The museum is housed in a building of 1928, originally a stable, on two levels with a rectangular plan, built with anti-seismic criteria and with state funding. In 2006 the building was renovated to current anti-seismic standards, with a new roof of six chestnut trusses; the wall decorations are the work of the artist Monica Renzi. The museum opened on 11 August 2010, and many of the objects on display were donated by the inhabitants of Configno and the neighbouring hamlets.

Since 2008 management has been entrusted to the Ente Museo Configno, a local cultural association that also looks after the nearby Oasi di Orie Terme; its director is Pier Luigi Betturri. According to the press sources cited, the building is the only public building in the municipality of Amatrice that suffered no damage in the 2016 earthquake.

On the ground floor are displayed farm and livestock tools, rare studded collars of Maremma dogs, dioramas of the blacksmith’s and carpenter’s workshops, a numismatic collection of perforated lira coins, and a model of the places chosen for the film “Immaturi”. The first floor holds rooms of traditional life between the 18th and 20th centuries, such as an 18th-century kitchen, a 19th-century tavern, a corner for weaving and an early 20th-century schoolroom, as well as documents on the census of 1879. One section is devoted to the legend that the amatriciana was born in Configno, with pasta-making machines, utensils and pots.
