About the museum
The museum in Cosoleto, a village at the foot of the Aspromonte that was rebuilt after the earthquake of 5 February 1783, holds period carriages from the 19th and 20th centuries, built in Italy and France. The collection came about thanks to the donation of the Marquises Taccone di Sitizano, a family that acquired the local lands in 1648 and took the marquisate title; the municipal administration presents it as one of the few thematic museums in Italy dedicated to carriages, and as the second most important in Calabria in this field.
The carriages, originally reserved for noble families and later also common among the middle classes, have been restored by local craftsmen. The museum was renovated and reopened with an inauguration ceremony on 12 December 2024, attended by the mayor and the municipal administration. Cosoleto is one of the municipalities of the Aspromonte National Park, established in 1994.
