About the museum
The music museum is one of the sections of the Casa della Cultura “Leonida Repaci” in Palmi, the municipal cultural complex that also houses the ethnographic museum, the picture gallery, the plaster-cast gallery, the antiquarium and the library. It is dedicated to two composers born in the town: Francesco Cilea, author of operas such as Adriana Lecouvreur and L’Arlesiana, and Nicola Antonio Manfroce, who died in Naples in 1813 while still very young, after composing Elzira and Ecuba.
The part devoted to Cilea holds scores, set designs, manuscripts and documents donated to the town, including a correspondence of about five thousand letters, many photographs from the stages of his theatrical career, medals, diplomas, postcards with the performers of his operas and the typescript copy of his autobiography. The miniatures of his brother Michele Cilea and a rich music library are also on display. One space is reserved for Manfroce, of whom much of the music has survived.
The collection also includes relics of Vincenzo Bellini, portraits of Rossini and Mozart, and photographs with dedications by Puccini and Toscanini.
