Museo delle genti di montagna

Ethnographic museum in the historic Palazzo dei Capitani, with over one thousand objects of mountain farming life between Tuscany and Romagna.

Opening hours

About the museum

The museum grew out of the research of Antonio Poli, who from 1976 collected tools and objects from the peasant and artisan families of Palazzuolo sul Senio. It was opened to the public in 1980 and set up in 1982 in the rooms of the Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo, owned by the Municipality, under the name Museo della Civiltà Contadina e Artigiana (Museum of Peasant and Craft Civilisation). After Poli’s death in 2008 the Municipality named the museum after him. It was re-arranged in 2002.

The collection, of over one thousand pieces almost all donated by local residents, tells the story of a mountain border community between Tuscany and Romagna in the first half of the 20th century. The ten rooms on two floors hold tools for processing grain, with a large dismantlable threshing machine, a reconstructed water mill, charcoal production, the tools of the blacksmith and the carpenter, a farmhouse kitchen, a loom and silk objects, and implements for livestock farming, hunting and the cellar.

The museum is also the civic museum of the Municipality and holds sacred objects, including a wooden Christ of the 13th century, a bell of 1496 and a missal of 1637. A catalogue describes the objects and their use.
