About the museum
The Ethnographic Museum of the Regole d'Ampezzo is dedicated to the oldest form of collective ownership in the Cortina valley: the Regole, institutions that for centuries guaranteed the community equitable access to woods and high-altitude pastures, while individual families kept their houses, meadows and fields on the valley floor. The completely redesigned display is housed in a restored sawmill.
The route occupies the two upper floors of the building. The first floor presents the institution of the Regole; the second floor covers the Regole territory and the collective management of woods and pastures, including the Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti d'Ampezzo, which the Regole have administered since 1990. On the lower ground floor a flexible display area hosts small temporary exhibitions and shows the collections of artistic craftsmanship, including cabinetmaking, silver filigree and wrought iron, as well as traditional costumes.
The collections have ancient roots: already in 1909 the Museo di Antichità Ampezzane, known as the Museo Elisabettino, had been founded in Cortina, and a small part of it is preserved here today. Through objects and images the museum explains how behind the landscape admired by visitors lie centuries-old decisions that the Ampezzo community continues to safeguard.
