About the museum
Ursus ladinicus is one of the two sites of the Museum Ladin (MusLa), which is dedicated to the culture, art, history and nature of the Ladins of the Dolomites; the other site is the Ćiastel de Tor in San Martino in Badia. In San Cassiano the museum tells the story of the cave bear and the geology of the Dolomites.
The permanent exhibition “La storia dell’orso delle caverne”, spread over three floors, presents the history and habitat of the cave bear, which lived more than 50,000 years ago (Ursus spelaeus ladinicus). On display are original bones, teeth and skulls, a complete skeleton, video installations and a life-size reconstruction of a female bear asleep with her cubs. A fossil collection illustrates the main stages in the formation of the Dolomites.
The museum focuses on the Grotta di Conturines, the oldest dated cave in the Alps and the highest site in the world where remains of cave bear and cave lion have been found. The museum also has a shop with themed books, souvenirs and Ladin crafts.
