Panels along the museum route trace the life and work of Vittorino Cazzetta thirty years after his death; a display case shows objects that belonged to him. The exhibition can be visited until the end of December 2026.
About the museum
The museum was founded in 1982 as the Museo civico della Val Fiorentina and since 1997 has borne the name of Vittorino Cazzetta (1947–1997), a self-taught researcher from Pescul. A pastry chef by trade, Cazzetta devoted his free time to exploring the mountains of home, gathering fossils and traces of the past and making discoveries of international importance; his fossil collection is the core of the exhibition.
The museum is housed in a building owned by the municipality, spread over three floors and accessible by lift. The route is divided into three sections. The palaeontological and geological section tells 252 million years of history of the Dolomites with fossils and a cast of the first dinosaur footprint trackways discovered in Italy, on Monte Pelmetto. The archaeological section is devoted to Mesolithic hunter-gatherers and holds the burial of the Man of Mondeval (Valmo) with its grave goods, as well as finds from the Riparo Mandriz rock shelter, Bronze Age finds from Mondeval de Sora, the Venetic cippus of Monte Pore, Roman boundary inscriptions and medieval materials. The historical section traces how people have lived in and used the high Dolomite altitudes over the millennia.
