About the museum
The museum is housed in Casa Steri, a 17th-century Campidano manor house in the historic centre of Siddi, in the Marmilla, next to the parish church. For several centuries the house belonged without interruption to the same family of local notables, and it consists of building blocks erected at different times, following the layout of the courtyard houses of the Campidano: living quarters, spaces for processing farm and pastoral produce, loggias and shelters for working and farmyard animals.
Starting from the memory of the house and its cycles of life and work, the museum documents customs, knowledge, production techniques and ways of cooking and eating that belong to the whole community. In some respects it draws on the idea of the house museum, but above all it aims to be a thematic museum of food and of the food history of rural Sardinia.
The route begins in the courtyard, with the well and the watering troughs, and the stables. It then moves through the reception room with walls painted in 1910 in Art Nouveau (liberty) motifs, the pantry, the reading room, the bread room and the monumental 17th-century kitchen with “sa forredda”. Next come the mill room, with a rare millstone driven by a horse from the 18th century, the oil press and cheese-making room and, on the first floor, the granaries with agricultural tools and the ethnographic collection of the painter Foiso Fois.
