About the museum
The museum is in Siddi, a small village in the Marmilla, on the main square, in part of the former Managu hospital, a rare example of a working hospital in rural Sardinia in the second half of the 19th century.
Its origins date back to 1992, when the municipality acquired a private collection of minerals and animals, mainly birds, reptiles and mammals of Sardinian and Italian fauna. In 2002 the “Museo civico naturalistico e mineralogico” was transformed into the Museo Ornitologico della Sardegna, with a regional thematic focus. Today the collection numbers more than 300 specimens, and the aim is to complete it with all the species present on the island, about 360.
On the ground floor are the reception area and the display section, with the evolutionary history of birds from Archaeopteryx to the beaks of today’s species, and scientific display cases. The first floor houses the section on habitats, an “active eco-environment” with visual, sound, touch and smell stimuli, the playful and multimedia educational section, a conference room and a sensory route designed also for people with disabilities. The museum, owned by the municipality of Siddi, is run by a group led by the Cooperativa Villa Silli.
