About the museum

The Museo delle Tradizioni Popolari of Canepina, a village in the Cimini Mountains in the Tuscia area, is housed in the former 17th-century convent of the Carmelite friars, next to the church of San Michele Arcangelo. Visitors enter through the cloister, which immediately evokes an atmosphere of times past.

The rooms hold everyday objects, work tools and machinery once used in local farming and craft activities, together with costumes and simple folk games. Traditional local trades are represented, such as the cooper, the shoemaker, the chair-maker, the coppersmith, weaving and spinning, and the woodland economy, a traditional resource of the area.

The route starts in the basement, where the rural environment and the cellar are reconstructed. On the ground floor are the world of childhood, a reconstruction of a school classroom from the first half of the 20th century and popular religiosity. Going up to the higher floors, you come to the basket-maker's workshop and, on the first floor, to other trades, notably the cultivation of hemp, for which Canepina has been known since the Middle Ages, and weaving. The museum is part of the DEMOS system of the Lazio Region.
