About the museum
The museum is run by a cultural and scientific association that looks after the marine biology and palaeontology collection of Angelo Vazzana, a biologist, physician, palaeontologist and scientific diving instructor. The collection grew out of many years of research and field observation.
The display is divided into two sections. The marine biology section presents species that live in today’s sea, including the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), the ribbonfish (Trachypterus), the corals Dendrophyllia ramea and black coral, and the gorgonians observed at Scilla. The palaeontology section holds trilobites, sea urchins (Clypeaster), nautiloids and ammonoids, with specimens such as the “Stella di Reggio Calabria” (Peltaster placenta) and the index fossil Persistrombus bubonius from the Late Pleistocene. The museum’s website also offers an itinerary through the myths of Scilla and Cariddi.
