About the museum
The “Pythagoras” Planetarium is owned by the Città Metropolitana di Reggio Calabria and opened on 12 March 2004. It is managed by the Società Astronomica Italiana (SAIt), Europe’s oldest scientific society, founded in 1871: from 2004 to 2023 under a memorandum of understanding, and since 2023 under a contract for educational and outreach activities.
The building has an external dome 12 metres in diameter, the second in Italy after Milan and among the largest in Europe, and an internal dome 8 metres across. Shows and lessons run on a dual projection system: the original opto-mechanical projector and a state-of-the-art digital system, in use since 2019. A second dome houses, on a fixed mount, a 15 cm apochromatic refractor; a 30 cm Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and three further reflectors from 9 to 20 cm are also available for night and day observation.
The planetarium is the regional hub of the Campionati Italiani di Astronomia and offers activities for schools, themed lectures for the public, evening observation sessions and special events. The photographic exhibition “Il Cielo in 30 scatti” has also been set up.
